“It's not a perfect setup, but technically it still qualifies.”

Have you caught yourself thinking this?

Why are you searching for reasons to allow this trade instead of equally considering reasons to reject it?

What's happening psychologically?

The desire to enter may have appeared before the justification. Instead of objectively assessing required conditions, the mind searches for the minimum evidence needed to make participation acceptable. Missing criteria become less important; small confirming details receive more attention.

Technical language is still used, but the purpose of analysis has changed. The question is no longer whether the trade qualifies; it becomes how to make it qualify. Technical reasoning can become a vehicle for emotional permission.

Often preceded by

Extended waiting, boredom, a missed move, eagerness to participate.

May involve

Motivated reasoning, confirmation bias, selective attention, rule negotiation.

Can lead towards

Lower-quality entries, inconsistent setup selection, unreliable trading statistics.

Catch it

Notice when you explain away missing criteria rather than neutrally checking whether they are present.

Interruption question

“Would I classify this setup the same way if I had no desire to trade right now?”

When this thought might be reasonable

A strategy may permit imperfect setups with adjusted risk. The important distinction is whether those allowances were defined beforehand.
