“NQ isn't doing anything. Let me check gold, S&P or Dow. Something must be moving.”
Have you caught yourself thinking this?
Why does waiting without a trade sometimes feel like doing nothing, even when waiting is exactly what your plan requires?
What's happening psychologically?
The market is quiet, but the mind still wants activity. When the primary instrument offers no valid setup, the trader may search other markets—not because they were in the plan, but because inactivity feels uncomfortable.
More charts create a sense of productivity: something to analyse, anticipate and perhaps execute. Yet scanning is not automatically productive just because it keeps you occupied.
Sometimes the search for a setup is driven less by opportunity and more by the discomfort of having nothing to do.
Often preceded by
Low volatility, quiet markets, extended waiting, boredom, absence of setups.
May involve
Boredom intolerance, stimulation seeking, restlessness, desire to feel productive.
Can lead towards
Unplanned market switching, unfamiliar setups, overtrading, reduced selectivity.
Catch it
Notice whether you opened another chart because it belongs to your process or because you were uncomfortable waiting.
Interruption question
“Am I checking another market because it is part of my plan, or because I cannot tolerate having nothing to trade?”
When this thought might be reasonable
Monitoring several instruments is legitimate when supported by an established strategy and sufficient knowledge of each market.
